The purity of the oxygen product and the
oxygen content of the crude nitrogen gas is measured sample of gas and a
highly activated form of copper contained in a saturated solution of
Ammonium chloride in Ammonium Hydroxide. The reaction is affected in a glass
tube, which is contained in a cylindrical reservoir. The sample of gas is
passed into the burette and measured. The sample is then drawn through the
interconnecting rubber and glass tubing into the reaction chamber where the
oxygen reacts with copper to form copper oxide. The oxide formed is
immediately dissolved by the solution of Ammonium Chloride in Ammonium
Hydroxide. When the reaction is complete the residual gas is returned to the
burette for measurement. The apparatus is calibrated to give a direct
reading for oxygen purity, in the region of 99.6%.
